So-called 'naked' cakes gained popularity as a reaction against the stereotypical ornately-decorated royal-iced fruit cakes which used to be chosen as wedding cakes in past times.  In contrast, simplicity is the keyword, the cake itself and its filling are highly visible, with just the slightest scraping of buttercream filling around the sides of the cake. Typically finished off with seasonal wild flowers or fruit.
